Typewriter Cake - Finally!

I can't believe I almost didn't post this cake.  I actually misplaced it and just found it last night!  This is my impression of a 1940's Royal Typewriter.

Emily ordered this cake for her boyfriends graduation.  She stated that he actually uses one daily and thought that it would make the perfect cake/gift.  I was so indredibly excited about making this cake.  I knew it would be a challenge for me though.  The base itself was easy, but I had to figure out a way to attached each key and the barrel paper feeder.....on top of making them.

I struggled with the barrel.  It was originally too heavy for the cake, so I had to come up with a new plan.  I decided to make the barrel out of poster board, then wrapped that in fondant.  The knobs at either end were the next problem.  I couldn't get them to stay attached.  Finally, I managed to keep them attached with toothpicks, of all things!

The drama was only half way over.  This cake was delivered to downtown Austin.  I had to drive it from San Marcos very carefully, so that the attached parts would not fall.  I am sure I made a few drivers angry......I promise I stayed out of the left lane!

Emily and her boyfriend were very excited about the cake.  I learned a lot about attaching decorations.....but oh so much more to learn!

Mini cakes and Cupcakes!

These were made for a dual birthday party......two little girls!  Their Mother order the girls there own special mini birthday cake and a few dozen cupcakes for the guests.  Both cakes and cupcakes were iced with buttercream then topped with marshmallow fondant.  The initials on top of the mini cakes were made of gum paste.

Sheet cakes, Sheet cakes, Sheet cakes.....

It seems like I always have a Birthday Sheet cake to make.  I'll be honest.....these are not my favorite cakes to make, but you have to make what your customer is asking for.  These are a few of the sheet cakes I make this past summer.  They are very traditional cakes with traditional designs.  They are easy for me to make and ice, so no complaints! =)

Jamie Pruitt's Baby Shower Cake

I made this for my girlfriend Jamie's Baby Shower back in June.  Yes, that is how far behind I am.  Anyway, I was very excited about this cake, because I planned to make my first "person" out of gum paste and fondant.  I thought that was going to be the part to give me trouble.  Turns out, that was the easy part compared to everything else that went wrong.

First....our A/C went out and it's the middle of June with scorching temperatures and high humidity. Secondly, because of the humidity, my fondant would not roll out to save my life.  This was actually supposed to be a two tier cake but I could only manage to roll out one tier of fondant.  Once I got that on....with problems (seems, etc...) no less, I figured I better no push my luck.

Oh....did I mention we still had to get it to Katy with a car load of poeple (7 people, all the bags, gifts, etc...in a Tahoe!  I had to hold it the whole way to keep it level.  Once we got it to Katy, we still had to get to Cypress for the shower.  Yep, Houston area is way more humid!!!!.  The cake finally made it there.  I was really disappointed with this, because it was for my good friends!  I do have to say though that I was totally pleased with my first Gum Paste Person!

Lightning McQueen Birthday Cake - 2D

The same per that order the Tow Mater cake also order this Lightning McQueen Cake. Fortunately, I'd heard of him!

This is technically a 2-D cake, but the Lightning McQueen car, itself, is raised and textured. Both the base and car are strawberry cake lightly iced with strawberry icing. Just like the Tow Mater, I but the base icing down to seal the cake, then followed with black icing to outline the designs. The car colors were piped in with a star tip, the sky was air-brushed in, and the road was made of crushed Oreo cookies...yum!

The best part of making both this and the Tow Mater cake was the deliver. The birthday boy was so excited!
